Mexodus is the new hit off-Broadway musical, now on tour, that has taken the theatre community by storm. Don’t believe me? What if I told you Lin-Manuel Miranda said so himself. He stated that, “There is a guitar duet in Mexodus that is as beautiful as anything I’ve seen on a stage this year.”

What Do You Need To Know About The Show

Mexodus is a 90 minute musical about the Underground Railroad that ran through Mexico. The main characters (and the only characters) are Carlos (Brian Quijada) and Henry (Nygel D. Robinson). The musical uses a live looping technology to make music, meaning there is no conductor, nor orchestra. This musical takes place back in the 1800’s in America. Henry, a black man, is enslaved at the age of 6 to a cotton farmer in Victoria, Texas, and Carlos is a medic turned farmer in Mexico. I won’t spoil the rest of the story to keep you on your toes during the musical.

Here’s a little about the actors/writers. Nygel D. Robinson is a singer, songwriter, and producer who knows how to play 10 instruments . Brian Quijada is a playwright, composer, and actor that has been nominated for an Emmy. Brian and Nygel have won many awards this year, including Outstanding Musical for Mexodus by the Drama League over musicals like Schmigadoon, The Lost Boys, and more.

In my opinion, Mexodus is truly one of the best musicals of the decade. The looping technology is amazing. Nygel D. Robison had one of the most passionate and soulful performances I’ve ever seen and Brian Quijada had one of the funniest and amazing performances I’ve ever seen. I definitely recommend this if it is in your area.

What Age Would You Recommend This Show To?

On the official Mexodus website, this show is recommended to age 12 and older. The official Mexodus website states that “Mexodus doesn’t hold back. This powerful, truth-telling experience includes strong language and references to racism, racial violence, and sexual abuse—all essential to the story and handled with care. Younger audiences are welcome at a parent or guardian’s discretion.” There are many scenes with racism and strong language as this musical takes place during slavery and the Underground Railroad through Mexico.

The Get Down Section

For Mexodus at Pasadena Playhouse, there are two extra rows in the way front with 6 seats per row. This is called the Get Down section. These are special seats that can only be purchased on TodayTix for $22 a person! You are seated about a foot away from the stage and if you’re in the first row of the two, you get a special surprise from Brian Quijada. During the show, Brian Quijada will “feed the chickens” at his farm. He throws “chicken feed” into the first row of the Get Down section. The “chicken feed” he throws is actually a guitar pick that you can keep and use. (You can see it in the picture below. It’s the yellow pick with the X.) There is also a poster of Henry being wanted that gets thrown into the first row of the Get Down section. This is another keepsake for one lucky person. These tickets are really cheap for all the surprises you get so if they are available, get them.

The soundtrack for this show can be found on Audible. There are also several clips of songs on YouTube and how their looping technology works. The opening song “Two Bodies” can also be found on Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon Music, and more.

I would definitely watch this show if it’s in your area. It deserves all the love it gets and these two men are genuinely so talented.
